Plot Summary

Set in Marseille in 1940-1941, 'Transatlantic' tells the incredible true story of Varian Fry, an American journalist, and Mary Jayne Gold, a wealthy American heiress, who led the Emergency Rescue Committee (ERC). Against the terrifying backdrop of Nazi occupation, they risked their lives to help thousands of artists, writers, and intellectuals flee Europe. Working from the Villa Air-Bel, a ramshackle mansion on the outskirts of the city, they sheltered and secured passage for those on the run, including some of the 20th century’s most significant cultural figures like Marc Chagall and Hannah Arendt. The series captures the intense pressure, danger, and moral complexity of their mission, contrasting the urgency of their work with moments of camaraderie and unexpected romance. Fry and Gold, along with their diverse team of young, charismatic resisters, navigated French bureaucracy, German surveillance, and American political ambivalence to forge passports, organize safe houses, and manage the fraught journey across the Pyrenees. The narrative focuses on the personal sacrifices and extraordinary bravery required to maintain hope and humanity during one of history's darkest periods, showcasing a vibrant but perilous community of refugees and their saviors. It's a visually lush and emotionally resonant historical drama about the fight for freedom and the power of dedicated individuals to change the course of history.
