Plot Summary
The Australian black comedy crime mystery series 'Deadloch' is set in the fictional, seemingly tranquil small town of Deadloch on the rugged Tasmanian coastline. The town's sleepy veneer is shattered when the body of a prominent local man, Trent Latham, is found dead on the beach just before the annual Winter Feastival is set to begin. This grim discovery forces two female detectives with drastically different styles to reluctantly pair up and lead the investigation. The first is Senior Sergeant Dulcie Collins (Kate Box), the fastidious, highly organized local officer who stepped back from detective work for a quieter life with her highly-strung wife, Cath. The second is Detective Eddie Redcliffe (Madeleine Sami), a brash, unconventional, and often abrasive officer brought in from Darwin to assist. They are aided by the overeager but often overlooked junior Constable Abby Matsuda (Nina Oyama) and the dim-witted Officer Sven Alderman. As Dulcie and Eddie begin to investigate, the initial murder quickly spirals into a series of interconnected killings of local men, each bearing a similar, gruesome signature: the victim’s tongue has been removed. The unsettling pattern suggests a serial killer is operating in Deadloch, leading to mass paranoia in the town. Their clashing personalities—Dulcie's methodical adherence to procedure versus Eddie's chaotic, often inspired leaps of logic—create constant friction, while the mounting pressure and high-stakes investigation force them to confront their own biases and personal problems. As the case progresses, the detectives uncover dark secrets hidden beneath the town's charming facade, revealing a deep rift among its residents and suggesting the murders might be connected to a past, botched investigation into another death. The series expertly blends a gripping, complex murder mystery with sharp, dark humor, subverting classic crime tropes while exploring themes of gender, small-town secrets, and systemic cover-ups, leading to an unexpected and shocking revelation of the killer's identity and motive.
