Plot Summary

The German fantasy horror series *The Gryphon* (*Der Greif*), based on the best-selling novel by Wolfgang Hohlbein, is set in the small German town of Krefelden in 1994. The story centers on 16-year-old Mark (Jeremias Meyer), a misfit who spends his time with his older brother Thomas and their friend Memo. Mark is trying to navigate typical teenage challenges: school, social awkwardness, and his first love, Becky (Lea Drinda). His life is dramatically changed when Thomas introduces him to an old, dark family secret: a chronicle passed down through generations of men in their family. This chronicle describes the 'Black Tower,' a parallel world ruled by a world-devouring, monstrous creature known as The Gryphon. According to family lore, their destiny is to fight this creature. Mark, whose father seemingly went mad and died after obsessing over the chronicle, initially rejects this burden, wanting no part in the 'family tradition.' However, the reality of the Black Tower is violently confirmed when Thomas is unexpectedly kidnapped by The Gryphon's stone slave hunters and dragged into the parallel world. Driven by a need to save his brother, Mark, along with Memo and later Becky, is forced to confront the dark legacy. He discovers that he is the 'World Traveler,' a unique being with the ability to traverse between the two worlds using only his imagination, a gift The Gryphon desperately covets. As the friends embark on a perilous adventure into the terrifying Black Tower, they must face terrifying creatures and discover ancient secrets. They also have to contend with figures in their own world who are secretly agents of The Gryphon, such as Dr. Peters, Becky's father and Mark's therapist, who is revealed to be a shapeshifting illusionist attempting to manipulate Mark. The fight to save Thomas and, by extension, humanity, pushes Mark to accept his destiny and harness his extraordinary, world-altering power.
