Plot Summary
The German crime thriller miniseries, originally titled *Schlafende Hunde*, centers on Mike Atlas, a once highly respected police detective who has become homeless after suffering a mental breakdown triggered by a devastating event. Haunted by memories and suffering from severe PTSD, Atlas is seemingly living on the streets, having abandoned his professional life. However, his quiet, isolated existence is shattered when a new death raises disturbing and undeniable questions about a seemingly closed and settled murder case—the conviction of a man for the murder of a prominent judge. Compelled by his fragmented memories and a nagging suspicion of a miscarriage of justice, Atlas reluctantly begins a personal and unauthorized investigation into the decade-old file. Concurrently, a young and ambitious public prosecutor, Jule Andergast, who is just starting her career, also takes an interest in the cold case, driven by her own moral compass and a belief that the convicted man might be innocent. The unlikely pair, the disgraced former cop and the determined junior prosecutor, find their paths intertwined as they independently follow the convoluted trail of the past. Their investigation leads them down a dark and treacherous path, revealing a complex web of corruption that extends to the highest echelons of both the police force and the justice system, and even hints at a connection to a major terrorist attack that shook the city eighteen months prior. As they dig deeper, they uncover evidence of a massive conspiracy, realizing that the original murder was merely the tip of a much larger and more sinister operation. They must now navigate a dangerous environment where no one can be trusted, including their former colleagues and superiors, as they race to expose the truth and find the real killer before the powerful forces at play silence them forever. The series is a complex, character-driven mystery that explores themes of justice, trauma, and systemic corruption.
